Is it the compressor, or the clutch or relay?
A warm vent does not prove the compressor failed. The clutch that engages it, the relay and fuse that feed the clutch, a pressure switch, or simply low refrigerant can all stop it from running. That is why the shop checks those first and reads the pressures with the AC on. If the compressor itself is noisy, seized or not building pressure, the refrigerant has to come out before it is replaced, and under Section 609 of the Clean Air Act only an EPA-certified technician using EPA-approved recovery equipment may do that for pay.
Venting refrigerant is prohibited. The test result decides the repair, so you do not buy a compressor to fix a relay.
Why replace the drier and expansion valve with the compressor?
When a compressor fails it can shed metal and old oil through the system. A new one installed into that debris can fail the same way.
